Sissi, Franzl and the Zoo
Vienna has many beautiful sights, it’s hard to pick the best, so make sure you have enough time to enjoy or come back to Austria for another time later.
If you decide to spend your day (take a whole day for these attractions, it’s pretty huge!) in the district of Hietzing, you can experience two of Vienna’s most famous sights.
Schönbrunn Palace
First there is “Schloss Schönbrunn”, a palace of great historical magnificence. From the mid of the 18th century onwards it served as a summer residence for the old Habsburg monarchy and it was one of the hotspots of courtly life in Europe. You can walk around the private rooms of the famous couple “Sissi and Franzl” and get a taste of how it must have been to be of blue blood in old times. The ticket price is ranging from 14 to 30 €, depending on which part of the palace you want to see (yes, it’s very big).
Tip: Buy tickets online and avoid standing in line for too long, because in summer it’s quite busy there.
Schönbrunn Zoo
The second thing to discover in the area is located in the huge park of the palace. “Tiergarten Schönbrunn” was built in the late 18th century and is therefore the oldest, still existing zoo in the world! There are over 740 species including, elephants, ice bears, pandas and various monkeys. Every day you have the chance to see some animals get fed. After you have watched seals catching fish in midair, why not get yourself a little snack too at one of the zoo cafes. Tickets are around 18 Euros and you also have the possibility of buying them online.
