Streetfood in Austria
We want you to dig deeper (with a tiny wooden fork) into Viennas culinary streetfood live! So here you go.
Let’s start with something traditional, the “Würstelstand”. “Würstelstände” (sausage stands) can at the first glance seem similar to hot dog stands, but there is quite a different flair around them. Since almost a hundred years there are kind of a cultural institution in Vienna. You can choose between a variety of sausages. They are served with ketchup, mustard und either a piece of dark or white bread.
Directly in front of the “Volkstheater”, is the “Alt-Wiener Würstelstand zum Volkstheater”. It was recently named Viennas most popular “Würstelstand”. Its specialty are the spicy “Käsekrainer”, a pork based sausage with melted cheese inside. If you want to know how to order Käsekrainer in an old viennese way, we prepared vocabulary to became the ultimate local. Speaking of locals: It’s really hard to find people that really grew up in Vienna, they are rare – just like unicorns – if you get to know one, you are very lucky!

However, there are at least as much places where you can munch a delicious Kebap. Many people regard this food as classically Turkish, but actually the now most common form here (meat/falafel, vegetables and sauce within pita bread), appeared first in the Berlin of the 1970ies. So if you want to have the original experience of a Berliner Döner, whats more obvious than to go “Berliner Döner”? It is located at in the 7th district and quite a phenomenon. People even often stand in line to get one of these tasty treats.
So, if you are looking for a delicious midnight snack after partying, you will always find either a “Würstelstand” or a “Kebapstand” outdoor to fullfill your late night food dreams.
